Roger Samba and J. Paul Getty Scholars 2009-2010
The candidates have been chosen for the 2009 - 2010 Roger Samba and J. Paul Getty Scholarship for higher education in Marine Conservation. Biographies of this year's scholars can be read below.

ANDRISOA Aladin Danoary is 22 years old. He has a bachelor’s degree in marine science. Now, he is preparing a Master’s degree in Marine Science at the IHSM. He is interested in conducting research regarding octopus fisheries in the Velondriake MPA. “I applied for the Samba-Getty fellowship programme because I couldn’t afford to continue my research without a supporting grant. Lack of funding is one of the causes for failure of many Malagasy students to complete their studies.”

RAVELOMAHAFALY Andriamihaja Guénolé is 19 years old. He has just finished secondary school in 2009, and is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science at the IHSM (Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marine), University of Toliara. “I submitted my application to the “Samba-Getty” fellowship programme as the scholarship will allow me to concentrate fully on my studies, rather than being disturbed by any financial worries.”

RANAIVOSON Bemana Njara Jose is 20 years old. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science at IHSM, Toliara University after having completed secondary school. He submitted his application to the Samba-Getty fellowship program in order to support his studies in marine resource management, and eventually make his contribution to the sustainable management of Madagascar’s natural resources.

RAHARIJAONA Ferdinand is 26 years old. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Environment and Biodiversity Management in 2008. He has been working for SAGE/Toliara (Service d’Appui a la Gestion de l’Environnement) as a socio-organizer. He is pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in conservation biology at Toliara University. “I applied for the Samba –Getty fellowship for two reasons: First I am a conservationist and come from Morombe, just north of the Velondriake MPA. Second, I would like to take part in conservation and protection of biodiversity and the environment. The fellowship will allow me to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to manage my region’s natural marine resources. |

RAOELIARITIANA Jany Olivia is 17 years old. She has just finished secondary school in 2009 and is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science at the IHSM, University of Toliara. "I applied for the Samba-Getty fellowship program because I’ve noticed the increasing effects of climate change which is one of the major factors affecting our environment. I would like to make my contribution to managing the natural resources upon which human life depends.”

MOZA HERIAZO Namara Ejedienne is 28 years old. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Science in 2008. She is pursuing a Master's of Science at the Faculty of Sciences, Toliara University. She would like to conduct research concerning mangrove forests within the Velondriake MPA. She applied for the Samba-Getty fellowship to allow her to accomplish this research.

ANDRIAMANOHISOA Reveloson Miora is 24 years old. She has studied at ESSA (Ecole Superieure des Sciences Agronomique), at the University of Antananarivo and obtained a degree in Engineering in 2009 (Waters and Forests option). She has been working for NORCROSS- Antananarivo (an NGO working on forestry conservation) as a socio-organizer since November 2009. Now, she is pursuing a master’s degree (DEA) in Forestry, Environment and Development at ESSA. “I applied for the Samba-Getty fellowship to secure financial, pedagogic and relational support which will allow me to accomplish my research and to attain my professional goals, which include managing my country’s natural marine resources”. |
